Celestine V
Pietro Angelerio · 5 Jul 1294 – 13 Dec 1294 · 5 months · resigned
Issued a decree confirming that a pope may resign, then immediately used it.
Did
- Ended a two-year conclave deadlock by being the compromise nobody feared.
- Restored Gregory X's strict conclave rules, still roughly in force.
- Founded the Celestine order, before any of this.
Didn't
- Govern. Charles II of Naples ran the paperwork.
- Stay. Resigned after five months; Dante filed him under 'the great refusal.'
- Get out alive: his successor locked him in Fumone, where he died in 1296.
