Francis

Jorge Mario Bergoglio · 13 Mar 2013 – 21 Apr 2025 · 12 yrs · died

First Jesuit, first from the Americas, first to take the name. Lived in the guesthouse, not the palace.

Did

Issued Laudato Si' on the environment (2015).
Reformed Vatican finances, slowly and against resistance.
Opened discussion on topics his predecessors had closed.

Didn't

Change doctrine much; the style changed more than the rules.
Satisfy either wing: too much for one, not enough for the other.

From the record

Pope Francis was the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of Vatican City from 13 March 2013 until his death in 2025. He was the first Jesuit pope, the first Latin American, and the first pope born or raised outside Europe since the 8th-century Syrian pope Gregory III.
