Gregory VII
Ildebrando di Soana · 1073 – 1085 · 12 yrs · died
Made an emperor stand barefoot in the snow for three days at Canossa. Then lost the war anyway.
Did
- Banned lay investiture, the practice of kings appointing bishops, and excommunicated Henry IV for ignoring him.
- Wrote the Dictatus Papae: 27 claims, including that a pope can depose emperors.
Didn't
- Win: Henry marched on Rome in 1084, installed an antipope, and Gregory died in exile at Salerno.
